Is this pottery?

It looks to be clay. It is tempered with what appears to be sand and very small pebbles.
it has a slight curved shape as well as what appears to be part of a rim.
Found in Illinois

Yeppers, that's a pottery shard, the clay is infused with grog, typically sand, mica,freshwater shell or a combo., grog is used to prevent excessive shrinking during firing so the pot doesn't crack or split
Very good chance there's more where that was found.

Finding pottery sherds usually indicates a long term camp site, so spend a little time looking that area over.
