We all have those "back up" sites for when things go horribly wrong and you need some place to dig...well one of my favorite back up sites is nearing the end of it's life span. An venerable spot that has produced 50+ wheats, 5 silvers, some old tokens, old Canadian coins and a ton of cool junk. Did I mention the marbles? TONS of marbles, both old and new. Anyways, the lovely mounds of dirt are soon to be seeded or sodded over and access cut off for good. No worries, I've gotten it pretty well covered, I was finished detecting it.
But there was the matter of the marbles...I don't collect them on purpose or even know much about them. But there was such a cool variety coming out, it would a shame for them all to get buried again. So it was a question of timing...which would come first, the sod or a nice soaking rain that would wash out even more marbles. Yesterday and last night we got the nice soaking rain
So I spent 5 hours simply walking the site without a detector...very naked feeling, wandering back and forth like a drunken marble hunting zombie. Didn't take long before fresh marbles started appearing. The previous record at the site was 18 in one day, but that was while detecting...I just knew I could break that just walking after a good rain.
In the back of mind I knew this used to be a good coin site too, so I kept an eye out for coins washed free. Site is kind of hard to detect, tons of large junk, pretty easy to miss stuff...and I did. About a hour into the walk I spotted a shinny '42 merc just laying out exposed as if it had just been dropped yesterday. Don't feel too bad though, only picked up 4 coins total, the merc, a wheat, a clad dime and a nickel. In the begining coins were laying exposed everywhere...so most of the coins seem to have gotten sucked up in the detecting phase.
Final take was 32 marbles, a smurf charm, small cobalt blue bottle, 4 coins and a ton of odds and ends like buttons not pictured. I think smurf charm has to be my find of the day
Over 100 marbles gathered by myself and the hunting crew at this site over it's life span...the most prolific marble site I've ever seen.
