It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

At a kid's birthday party I was talking with one of the dads who noticed my Garrett hat. I mentioned that I'm always interested in caches but do all kinds of detecting. He kinda chuckled and started asking if I could find deeply buried things, naturally I said 'yes'. Then he asked me if I had any insight into how people might think when they hide stuff..I said 'yes, some'. And THEN, he told me this:

One of his good friends had a grandfather that built a nuke proof shelter back in the cold war days on his land. He stocked it with all kinds of stuff..including a BUNCH of gold. Well, in typical fashion, he passed away without telling where the gold was! This is a large amount of gold-considering the value the family knows he bought and the price of gold at that time...well...wasn't NEAR what it is now! So these relatives have searched and searched and not found it. Now they're considering just selling the land to get the value out of that at least. It's in an area where land sells for quite a premium nowadays.

Of course I told him I wasn't interested...NOT! LOL... I'm praying the family is ready to give it another shot!

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Heck I wouldn't be able to sleep either! Best of luck in your quest.

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Couple suggestions where to hunt if you get permission: 1) in the shelter (gold and lead both absorb radiation so are used as shielding); 2) sides or roof of shelter (see 1).

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

How much land? IF they do decide to sell, let us know. May can workout a joint venture. :dontknow:

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

i found a bomb shelter by accident, about 20yr ago, in a large populated
midwest city, the homes in that hood dated back to ww2, and fences separated
the yards, all the houses had detached garages, that sit in the back of house
and most had an attached small shed, at the neighbors fence line. a tree branch
had fell on the neighbors fence, an old wood picket, i was replacing that
section, and while digging out the old posts, i hit a row of cinder block, and
thought maybe it was a foundation, i dug another ft and more block, got curious
dug another foot, more block, same at the next post hole, i talked to the owner
of the property that had the block on it, he didnt know,he had only owned the
house 8yr, we dug across the top of blocks and it was slab, we found the entry
under the floor of the shed,a lot of stores at least enough for a month for 4.
no gold but 50,&60s coin, 500$green, most of the stores was military issue.
and the popular mechanics plan, how to build a backyard bomb shelter,
so if you get to look for it, see if you can find those plans, IIRC the plans
date was 1961, and had several options for shelters

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Wow, that's cool! I'll go find those plans just BECAUSE..who knows, 2012 is coming, I may need one! LOL..

I still haven't heard back yet on this. My attitude about this coming to fruition is 'I'll believe it when I see it'! However, I'll be READY at a moment's notice if they seem willing to discuss it with me!

If this was something substantial, he may have needed a building permit, which should have the layout and location.

If it was on a huge piece of land and he just built it with no paperwork, I still couldn't see him putting it a long way from the residence, or in the lowest part of the land.

When you say the relatives have searched, do you mean with a metal detector (not for the gold, but for the possibly steel entrance door), or did they only do a visual ?

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Is it they can't find the shelter or they can't find the gold in the shelter?

Wow, right at the height of it. There are alot of them out there. Somebody must have passed away and left the secret underground there.

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Heard anything? Can you call him? You know we don't have enough to keep us busy!!

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

The shelter they know about..the good stuff they don't. I don't know what methods they've used to search, even whether they've had anybody from outside the family to help. Now Saturna...I know you're not from around here..but this is TEXAS! Building permit? :laughing9: No offense BTW!

I haven't heard anything yet. The person who told me of this is a CEO of a medical conglomerate and travels quite a bit. I actually have two things I'm waiting to hear back on from him. The first may be more important in the long run than the cache--a new job!

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

pyledriver, found it
i think the shelter i found was a modification of the ,under the patio version.
im sure others that built the shelters, prob made modifications to theirs too,
to suit their needs, here is what pm published, hunters dont forget to check
those areas for shelters, could be someone died and told know one about it
and prob the rural and country areas built the too

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

You might keep in mind they he didn't have to hide the gold IN the shelter. Unless the nukes strike the land the shelter was on the gold isn't going to be hurt by being buried somewhere else. It would also make good sense to separate the gold from the shelter in the event he planned on letting other people into the shelter with him. He may not have wanted them to find his gold.

If it is separate it should be near the shelter but far enough away that someone else at the shelter wouldn't see him digging it up.

Just a thought...

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Still don't have permission yet.. Found out the family DID sell the land but never did find any gold. Now I'm working on finding out who the new owner is. They never told the new owner about the potential fortune on the land! THAT is how caches are placed and lost! Well, one way..

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Sounds like a real adventure. Although another member said he didn't think the gold would be in the shelter, I would think that is IN the shelter, that is if there is any gold. If I built a shelter and had my stash somewhere, I would want it to be with me. If the shelter ever came into its actual use, he couldn't get out to make sure no one was digging his savings. It is easy to build a stash place in the floor, or the lower part of the wall, so even a "guest" would not see it. It could look like a drain or vent, but I'm quite sure that is where it would be hidden. It is just a natural thing, to want to keep an eye on it, so that would mean inside, not outside. Can you imagine the fear if you had your stash outside, and heard someone digging, and you couldn't get out to check, because of the radiation?
At least do a through check inside, then outside if nothing is found. I dint think you need any help on this one, so keep it to yourself.

Good luck!!

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Funny how most people do not understand fallout shelter mentality.
First you will not store anything out of shelter, out = radioactive hell. Also while gold would have some value, money would most likely be worthless. Basic items like medicines would be best for trade value.

Cold war thoughts were stay in shelter minimum 2-3 weeks.

Proper design has the door opening into or else you may never get out.

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

Sadly, I think this 'lead' will go nowhere! The person who told me about it is somebody I rarely see and had forgotten to follow up on it last time I did ask. I have a lot of irons in the fire and a few caches to chase already..I'm gonna let it die unless he contacts me with information that I can actually ACT on.

Sorry to get everybody all spun up!

Here's the way I would look at it. Who in their right mind would get the permit and build this thing? Would you want anyone knowing where your storehouse was? Especially in the event of nuclear disaster? Heck NO! I say, no permit and close to the house, say within 100 yards and with a very open and direct line of sight from the back door of the house. Possibly near a garage like another poster has mentioned. Also, I would venture a guess that there is a way into it from the house or garage. I say, drive by once a week or every other week to make sure it doesn't go on the market then if it ever does, INVEST.

Re: It was just a casual conversation and now I can't sleep!

If he was to spend any time in this shelter he would need an air vent. He would also want this shelter in a place he could get to in a hurry.
