It's raining bullets!
The past few weeks I have been detecting a civil war site found by Dirtstalker aka "Bird Dog." A Union ammo cart must have turned over there, because I have so far found 112 dropped bullets-Union three ringers, Williams Cleaners and Williams Regulations ("Pistol Carbines"). A couple of weeks ago I thought I had found about all I could find until I figured out that most of the bullets are deeper than my AT Pro can reach. Since then I have been steadily finding bullets and percussion caps by digging down about 18 inches or so and searching with my Garrett carrot.
Yesterday I had my best day yet-I found 17 bullets, 31 percussion caps (many of them fired but also some drops), the front of a South Carolina Dispensary bottle and a yet-to be-identified small crescent-shaped pewter relic. One of the bullets had been carved into a game piece by a Union soldier-a first for me.
The site is very close to a 1750s British fort and I am guessing (or maybe hoping would be a better word) that the crescent-shaped piece is from a British soldier's uniform; if anyone has an idea of what it might be please chime in-I would appreciate it. In the words of Arnold, "I'll be back"!
