It's those types of people that will ruin it for all of us!
Hello everyone! This is a bit more of a rant and a question for all of you.
I have been hunting a local elementary school that dates to 1890. The front yard has produced some great wheat pennies. Alas though, no silver yet. So, with high hopes, I keep hitting the school waiting for that first silver.
So, I show up at the school Sunday morning at about 6:30am. The front yard of the school is open (where I have found the wheaties). Over to the right, there are two people in the 'playing field'. Upon a closer look, they are metal detecting. At first I smile knowing that I had just hit most of that field just the day before. BUT... as we all know, no place is EVER hunted out. I decide that I will talk to them in a little while. I figure I can make some new friends, maybe some new hunting buddies and also find out of THEY found the silver that is eluding me.
About an hour or so later, I finish up in the front (finding only clad), and I go over to the right to say hello to the two guys. They are gone. I figure I'd go over and finish the field from where I had left off.
When I entered into the playing field, that is when I saw it. Clumps and clumps of dirt and grass everywhere. It appears to me that they were digging with a spade shovel, and just throwing it randomly back in the hole. I went over to one hole and tried to straighten it up a bit. That is when I saw that the hole was about 3 feet in diameter and soft as heck (meaning they didn't even pack the hole back up). When I started looking around, it looked like a gopher had a field day in the field.
I was disgusted, and decided to quickly leave. If anyone came by, I would be the only one standing there with a detector. Wouldn't look very good.
Why do people DO That sort of thing? Don't they realize that OTHER people are going to see that... and that it looks horrible! Don't they realize that 'other people' will form a very BAD opinion about metal detecting, and that could lead to people fighting to have metal detecting banned in certain areas?
Do you think i'm being too picky? WHen I dig holes, I try to keep the hole to about 4" across at MAXIMUM... and when I'm done, I make sure to replace the plug as perfectly as I can. I even go as far as to run my hand back and forth across the grass to sort of hide the fact that there was a hole there at all.
Am I being too picky? What do you think?
I just HATE people like that. If I see them out there again, I am going to definitely give them a piece of my mind!
