It's time to plant a coin garden. It's a good test for all of us to do.

We need a test survey from a bunch of us to make it right.
Please no guesses.
Make your coin garden using all the silver you can find and copper coins also go from 1" to 2 ft
letting us know your detector settings and swing at its best
It wont take much time from your day and shoot you might learn something new also.I will.
OK I'll See some of you back here tomorrow night with your post to get the ball rolling.

Planting coins is OK so long as you don't expect them to sprout. Two feet is sorta deep for a test plot, 12 inches is more like it. Be sure to include a coin with a nail over it and mark the spots with golf tees. Draw a diagram with the coins marked and the depth for practice.

I'm going to bury all denominations at 2-4-6-8-10-12-inches and deeper if I can still get a reading.
laying them flat then on edge.
I will use the nail test at my deepest good sounding reading.
We need to know what machine you use how it worked on discriminate and non disc.
any good question you can think to answer wins you more points

OK I had to hang sheet rock today and did'nt get to the testbut I was hopeing some one would get the ball rooling with a test.

I've been trying to get others to do this since I learned it's the only way to cut through the fat, so ta speak.

But a word of warning is in order, a lot of folks aren't going to like what they learn!

We may see a sudden rush of used detectors on ebay

It's very difficult to get people to do this. I think in part it's because many really don't want to know the truth.

I have part of one and want to get more planted. But some idiot put a whole bunch of snow in my yard. I will post results as soon as I can. I think you have a great idea to do this. Detailed information is important and we should not try to show one detector is better than another. Let the facts fall where they may.

Would it not all depend on the soil you are using?The winning detector in your 'garden',may not be the winner between the same detectors in someone else's 'garden' across several states.

warsawdaddy has a good point and there are alot of other factors involved moisture content in ground, sweep speeds, are they ground balanced the same? we can go on. i think we all know there are alot of variables that can make differences. but the thing is, it still would turn out to be interesting to see all the results everbody came up with. maybe along with the results people can give some additional information like the state they are in, ground conditions etc. if two or three people in the same state like Florida,( where pretty much the soil is the same everywhere), we can get a more accurate result. places where the soil changes every few feet will be a little more challenging.

Stuck.Few more pressurized pokes on it and started working ok.Lite to the touch now.

Well I had a good idea but have not had the time to do the test myself.

As far as different soil consistency goes .
just use soil you would get from a garden . no clay and no sand. But if that's all you have then just let us know what type you tested with.
Bury your coins stomp it down and run your detector at different speeds . this will also help you find what speed works best with your machine which might surprise some of you and myself as well. We might learn that we have been going to fast or to slow and loosing depth.
I am going to do my darndest to do my test tomorrow.
I'll start a new post under "Detector depth results" post yours.

Instead of "digging", use a couple of feet of conduit (size will depend on the largest target you intend to bury), mark the conduit in 1" increments to the depth you intend to use.

Use a hefty wood block between the conduit and "hammer" to prevent damage to the conduit. Drive it into the soil for your desired depth, insert your target and using a dowel of some sort, replace the "original soil" into the hole by pushing it out of the conduit. Record the information for that target(s) on your test garden chart and move on, repeat for the next target.

Only disturbs a minute amount of the soil, and your "garden" will be viable for reliable readings in a much shorter period of time.

Worked for me for several decades now.
