Ivy Baker Priest signed silver certificate

I thought this was pretty neat. My sister in law and her sister hold estate sales for people. There's no telling what they might come across when contracted to do a sale and they start going through people's stuff. They recently came across this 1 dollar silver certificate and accompanying letter signed by Ivy Baker Priest who was the United States treasurer under president Eisenhower at the time the note was printed. It was signed by her while she was the treasurer of the state of California and just a year before her passing. On a side note, she was also the mother of Pat Priest who played Marilyn Munster on the 1960's tv show "The Munsters".

Suprisingly, it's really not worth a great deal of money, but it is a pretty neat item. Apparently she signed quite a few notes as a courtesy as they are fairly common on ebay and other sellers. Back in my younger days of collecting I'd have probably bought it for myself, but I'm at a point in my life where I need to start getting rid of the stuff I have.

When Pres Johnson pulled silver coins in 1964 we still had silver certificates. You could trade a silver certificate for silver so no one was worried about silver coins. Then, in 1968, the government moved the goalposts again and silver certificates were no longer redeemable for silver anymore.🤷🏼

After silver coin production ceased in '64 and a lot of people started hoarding their silver coins from change, my oldest brother had a paper route in my town which included the newspaper vending machines. He was able to sort out a good amount of silver from the new clad coins. Because of the amount of dimes, he was able to nearly fill a few Whitman folders with just about every date and mint mark except for the rare keys

Neat piece of memorabilia. My Mother in Law had a silver certificate signed by her "outfit" when she was stationed in Europe during WW11. She was in the Army. The same silver certificate was also signed by Mickey Rooney, as he and my Mother in Law won a Jitterbug dance contest together !
