Could this be the J. MANDIGO you're looking for... probably not.
She was born in 1912, but your tag looks more likely to date to the 19thc.
Possibly a family relation?

If you do a Google search for "J. Mandigo Railroad" quite a few results pop up.

Don, that was what I suspected but I’m not very familiar with these. The fact that it happens to be #1 might indicate that there weren’t many of these in the numerical series. Or in other words, Mandigo only had a couple pieces of luggage or even just this one. I also can’t find any reference to a Location or transportation vehicle with the name J. Mandigo, which make me think it was probably an individual’s name.

Creskol, I would love for it to be a railroad tag but I’m not finding that connection.

However, I found a similar tag online that appears to have been a SteamBoat tag.

There is a Jerry Mandigo in St. Johns, Michigan who ran a hotel in the 1870s. He seems to have only been in St. Johns for a few years in the 1870s. I think he could be the same person as the Jeremiah Mandigo that Creskol found in Wayland.

Hotel coat check tags from that era have the same design as your piece. If you found it in the area of St. Johns that may be good circumstantial evidence to connect it to him.

Where did you find the information about him running a hotel?

If you google some key words some old Clinton Co. Michigan newspaper stories show. Here are a couple. It also indicates he ran a bar with the hotel. It looks like it was called the St. Johns Exchange at some point. He shows up in the 1877 Business Directory as the proprietor.
