Yesterday;
We did 4.5 hrs on 3 different Roman Sites (Brooch Field, HW Field, 2 6s Field).
Went on Brooch field first to prove one of the edges. Spend 2.5 hrs (5 man hours) with nothing, our hardest hit this year, that stung. Moved to MW & got 5 Roman Coins but not much about other than one of my best Roman bronzes this year - one I need & in good condition.
Then moved to 2 6s where we got 9 Roman Coins.
As the oilseed rape had just been drilled it took out 4 of our Roman Sites from 1 farm out of the to do list.

Today;
In light of yesterday we had to do a re-think & decided to return the lower Roman Farmstead at the Track-Way area. Spent 6 hrs & found lots of Roman Coins & a surprise big hammered. For those of you that dig numbers this hit as a 03 on the Deus. But because I dig nearly everything, I could tell this iffy signal was not iron & I thought it was a deep Roman Coin! (I dig lots of --,00,0-10s, if they don't sound like nails) I think this big hammered was at about 10 inches on its side.

14 Roman Coins (Yesterday)
32 Roman Coins (Today)
Broken Tudor Button
Rose Farthing
2 Tudor Clothes fasteners
Roman Steelyard Weight
Roman Bracelet bit
Roman Pin
Roman mystery Military? Fitting (Hook)
Hammered Halfgroat of Charles I
Hammered Shilling of James I 1603-4 (My first):icon_thumright:

UPDATE;
Turns out one of the Roman Coins might be an unrecorded/unknown variant.
Cru'Dads thoughts to follow...
FURTHER UPDATE;
Well Cru'Dad was not far off to spot this Very Rare coin;
Turns out 1 of this type is published in a book we don't have but its the 1 in the British Museum(BM). The BM have spotted 1 other sale in France, so ours is the 3rd one known/recorded;
AE3 Crispus
Obverse:IVL CRISP-VS NOBIL C
Reverse: CAESARVM NOSTRORVM VOT Dot X
Mint: PLON crescent

Great finds. I always enjoy seeing your posts...keep it up!

Cru,

Really liking that shilling.

Regards + HH

Bill

Wow that is one monster hunk of silver. Compared to a US silver dollar, how big is that thing? Also, it never fails to amaze me how your Roman coins many X older than the US have nice patinas. What was the metallurgy that allows for that degree of preservation? We find large cents 160 yrs old that are trashed.

nice finds, great silver.....keep it up, you know i want more celtic gold....the best coins EVER!

Simply amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Don't own a dollar, but see my cent.:thumbsup:

Hard to explain why some Roman BRONZE Coins survive better than others. There metal content varies hugely, from type to type, from mint to mint, from period to period.... so on

I'm trying, they are a hard beast to go over. Some hunt all their life with none.

That's a nice one!

I suppose that along with the odd bit of gold that the bog-trotting is worthwhile for finds like that.

Big hammered Silver... :hello2: I don't remember you posted one before. Great day!

Wonderful hammered, Crusader. And congrats on the Roman you were looking for.

I can't even fathom pulling something that old out of the ground. must be exhilarating! Congrats!

The hammered was a massive surprise. The Roman coin count was 30% greater than we could of hoped for.

Holy Moly that's a big OLD silver! And by old, I mean it's probably pretty rare that a big one like that went so long without being found right?

That would be...ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1472862279.321307.webp

Cheers Cru, very excellent find chap!

Not really rare because it should have been found already. Because of a combination of factors;
They would need permission for this land. (Although that doesn't stop some)
They would have to of found this Roman Site where this random coin came from.
Then they needed to have gridded it all.
Have my detector & settings - Dads Cortes would not have heard it.
But more importantly it needed to be lost in the first place & in those days it was a small fortune that only the elite carried & they didn't loss things easily.

I wouldn't say it was the Roman Coin I was looking for that would be Wish List No.3 - Gold Roman (any type).
It was a reverse type that Cru'Dad had spotted in the books & wondered if we would ever get one.

However, because we find so many, its become harder & harder to get any that we need. So every new type or variant is a bonus to us.

Yeap, that's because we have only ever found 4 Shillings; 2 Lizzies, 2 Charles I.

So my first James I.
