I didn't read it, but would bet it was one of those balloon bombs the Japanese used.

Yes, it was identified as a Japanese Navy mortar round from WWII (missing its fins). Blast radius 500 feet. Here's a better picture of it from another source:



It's believed that the people who formerly owned the property used that area of land as a scrap heap.
