Japanese stick with string, nut & a round larger hollow piece that opens on 1 side

OK I have an "I don't know what it is" wood thingy with a stick, string, nut like thing & a large part that opens up a small compartment on one side that is hollow, I can't figure out what this is for or what it does! The other side does not open but looks the same as the side that does open. Anyone know? I'm stumped! The last picture shows the only way I make any sense of how it might go together but I still don't see the point or use. Best I can guess is it's simply a wall decoration with a sort of secret compartment?? When the string is pulled tight it wont open the little lid on the compartment but with slack in the line it will open up.

BTW this was found in the bottom of a box of some old Chinese & Japanese items.

Merry Christmas Eve to you also Surf... And Thanks a lot! Was having difficulty finding anything like it! I appreciate it very much! And it's not missing part of the sheath it's just an illusion as the pipe would go right in the angle cut end with the hole & get held in place perfectly.
