Johnny "Cache"...I got it one piece at a time...

Much is made of finding caches of coins, and I must admit that it would be an titillating experience, just one I've never had the pleasure of. This is my "cache", assembled from coins I dug (roughly half of those in the picture) and coins I have bought with dug clad.

I came back to this hobby last fall after a 13 year hiatus. I had sold all but 29 silver dimes and a couple half dollars. I hunted for 3 months last fall...until the ground froze, then a few excursions through the spring. I began hitting it pretty hard 5 weeks ago.

It is still possible to amass an amazing amount of silver. I use every opportunity to add silver to my collection, scouring eBay for real bargains on which I can profit and get to keep a few free ones too. There are 9 Barber half dollars in this picture that I got on eBay. I bought a lot of 10 coins for 89 dollars (of dug clad) and sold one (1892-O) for 215 dollars. The profit was spent on still more silver.

Don't let the fact that you may not live where there's lots of silver coins in the ground discourage you from amassing your treasure.....you can still do it. This picture represents only about 4 1/2 months of evenings and weekends in the hobby.

Way to go there, Wyatt. Nows the time to sell some of that silver and pick up a couple gold pieces. You didn't happen to buy any of those counterfeit Trade Dollars they were selling on E-Bay, did you? Hope not. All that E-bay stuff should come with a caveat emptor. What part of PA you from anyway? I had a good hunting buddy who quit on me and started selling all his stuff about 13 years ago. He used to use a White's 6000d hip mount. We did a lot of hunting in and around Philly. That wouldn't be you though. His name was Dan. He was one hell of a hunter. Well, good luck with the rest of your metal detecting.

There have been lots of those phony chinese things, and not just trade dollars...there are phony bust dollars as awell. I tend to buy walkers, franklins, and occassionally Barber coins. If I end up selling silver, it will be to buy a dollar coin in nice shape, and dated in the 1700s.

Wyatt, nice collection of found and bought silver. I like your clever thread title, too. And you give some good advice. Thanks for the photo and the info. I frankly never thought of using my clad to buy silver, but that's a great idea. There was an article somewhere posted on the internet (I got the link from the ICMJ website) in which the author predicted silver could reach $125.00 per ounce in a few years. If that happens, you'll have a good headstart. But I can only imagine how much inflation would be with a silver price like that. Ouch!! :'(
