I noticed the post about the flood in Austin. Johnstown had a similar, disastrous flood in 1889 (and 1936 and 1977...) in which 2,209 people perished. Flood control projects paved the river bed and sides to prevent subsequent floods, but I have to believe that much of the debris washed downstream and hauled out of the destroyed downtown contained a lot of coins and other valuable property. I plan to do some research this winter and see if I can do some digging in the spring...
