Just a Button

I found this in my Copper Fields yesterday. It's just a button but it is still pretty cool. I think it is about 200 years old. If I am not mistaken these were made between 1795 and 1815 (thanks PBK).

All I can read right now is GILT.

It kind of looks it's G I L - T - I V - - - - - - - between the L and T almost looks like an A or R. The rest is too shaded to make out.

Some buttons with similar "Gilt" backmarks date quite a bit later. We'd need a full, sharp mark to be sure about this one. Neat find, either way.

I love to find those flat type colonial buttons. You are right they are about 175 to 200 yrs old.
