Just a wheat penny, but it's by far the nicest I've found.

I was at a new ballpark that was an empty field since the 40s when the golf course shut down. I've only found new things there but somehow today I found this thing in hard packed soil 1.5 inches down. I thought it was trashed and pitted but it was just the dirty stuff on it. I cleaned this with 2 soaks in boiling peroxide and in between I ran an electric toothbrush over it to clean the dirt off. I couldn't believe the detail after I cleaned it off. That makes wheat #153 since starting 4 months ago.

That is got good detail. I still feel like I had a good day if I find a half dozen wheats. I found one earlier this week that was back in the 20s' that was pristine as well. How did you take such a good, close up picture like that?

Nice find, I found one yesterday too.

I totally agree. I love finding silver, but I'm a coin collector and wheats will always get me excited too.

To get the pics I use my DSLR on a tripod with a macro lens, a white background, and direct lighting. Sometime soon I plan to build myself a little studio box.

That is cool. I agree. I would prefer finding a handful of wheats verses one silver coin. I have been hunting on average twice a week and I have found close to 60 wheats since August. I still have not found a key date, but I have a few that are worth over $1.

My father is an avid coin collector and he loves it when I bring him encrusted unidentified coins. I generally don't look to hard too identify them at the find site, but I rather take them to his house and spread them out on the table and let him look through his lens. It is all about the history/collector value for me versus how much I could sell my coins for. If I found a huge cache I think that I would still probably keep them all.
