While combing through antique stores in Northern Arizona this weekend I came across an iron ball. The clerk insisted it was a cannonball. Price was good so I thought I'd risk it and buy the thing. It has an interesting casting mark that looks a lot like a fish.
Anyone have thoughts about what I bought? It weighs about 4.5 pounds and measures 3.11" diameter. See the enclosed photos.
Thanks

Odds are you found a grinding ball for a Ball Mill. They bring those in by the train car load to the Gold mines of Northern Nevada and with all the Copper mining that had gone on in Northern Arizona, I believe that is what you found. At some old mine sites you can find mill balls made of stone and those only came imported from France.
