Hi. I am interested in getting started in treasure hunting. I am looking at digging up old outhouse privy locations as well as getting a metal detector and looking for metal treasures. I was wondering if any of you friendly folks could help me get started? I don't have a metal detector yet and I am on a fixed income so I want to make sure I get a good one. Also if anybody can help me with some tips on how to visually locate an old privy location, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country)...

Welcome !

Welcome to TNet !

Research is key in making good finds - checkout your local Library and Historical Society.
Also, you could probably get a good deal on a good used Metal Detector from someone in this forum.

Good Luck & Good Hunting !

I’ve looked for privys to dig here where I live. Very rural area with many 1880s farms abandoned in the 20s-30s. No trace of any buildings. Just a scatter of broken bricks, glass, and porcelain. I have a nice probe and have looked for the telltale soft spot where the probe will penetrate. To no avail. It seems with yrs of farming on top these areas the privy’s have been well filled with soil and clay are are not findable. This is just my experience. It might be more productive in a town or city that still has old neighborhoods with 20s and before houses. The privy was usually located at the back of the lot on the left. Many were filled with debris and re-dug a short distance away.

Welcome to the forum. Best of luck!

If the area hasn't been plowed, you will often find a 3'x3' or 4'x4' square depression in the sod around 30-40ft. behind where the house sat. I don't have any interest in digging old outhouses, but I've often seen the telltale depression left behind in the sod.

As per a metal detector suggestion, we'll need a budget and a location because some detectors aren't well suited for certain soil types, etc.
