Found in a field, size of a penny. It has a light decorative design mostly around bent edges. My first thought was button cover but I believe it is too thick and made of lead or of a metal of similar density. Thank you for any help!

It looks like a hammered, carved CW era bullet to me. Interesting find, Breezie

Another thing you might consider is that it was heated and the marks were maybe made by a piece of cloth.

So you both think it started as a bullet and was altered for some reason by carving, hammering, or heated (which the marks do look like an impression of a burlap bag or another cloth). Why would that be done?

By the way it's nice to hear from someone from NC., before my detecting days I used to live in Lake Park NC, by Indian Trail & Monroe NC.

Yes, I think it started life as a CW lead bullet. Soldiers had a great deal of 'camp' time during the CW, and out of boredom or being artistic, would carve bullets. Many of the hammered bullets were used as gambling chips or checkers. Some of the carved ones were chess pieces. They made fishing weight sinkers as well as all sorts of 'camp art.'

WELCOME to the forum, and thank you for the NC welcome. Lake Park & Monroe are about 4 hrs. from here. I look forward to seeing more of your finds, :icon_thumleft: Breezie

:hello: Eric

Neat find, I have to agree with Breezie. What Peachy says junk is junque...by all means, this is a unique find not a piece of junk/junque. Congrats!
