ok for the most part the pictures describe themselves, reason i'm posting all of this is because 1) i'd like to know approximate value on some of this stuff and 2) any info on the coin set of formosa?  i know formosa is what was there before taiwan....and from what i gather formosa existed for less than a year....but that was the 1800's and theres no way these are THAT old.

also, sorry for not being here for a long time....just got finished moving from st. louis missouri to bremerton washington lol

oh and, the first coin....is copper...weighs in at 4 ounces...liked the lattice design on the edge, thought that might be important. obviously has some wear, but considering the age its in good condition.

second coin...not sure on material...guessing copper as well...guessing it weighs about 3-3.5 ounces

ok, for the taiwan set.....it looks like i've got 1 chiao, 2 chiao, 5 chiao, and 1 yuan
there are 2 identical sets like this and a 3rd thats missing a piece.
i've also got a 1965 uncirculated canadian set, and a 1967 irish set....and theres sudan, israel, mexico(1964)

as far as 54 bucks for a 236 year old coin with incredible detail.....don't people have any appreciation for this stuff?  i mean, i'm not really looking to sell it, i just thought something that old would fetch a higher price from collectors or something.  When it's this old i dont see it as money or as a coin or as a lump of copper.....i see it...more historically...not sure if that makes sense.  i'm looking at this coin, and the detail is just stunning, and i honestly feel priviledged to have this sitting in front of me...ok i'm weird..sorry  ;D

oh and thank you both for the links, never would have known what this one set was lol

i agree, the history of these things is more interesting than the price tag a lot of times. even though some coins are old, if they made a lot of them and a lot survived in pretty good shape the price will stay low. its worth a lot from a historical standpoint. imagine what life might have been like for the person that carried it around in their pocket..........OK....I'm weird too. ::)

That $54 is way out of line. Russian 5 Kopeks generally sell for around $20. I have bought a few, they are really interesting pieces.

Lady Dragon:
Only one aspect of a coin is it's market value--and one aspect of market value is demand. NWS how beautiful, historic, etc. the coin is, if there is little demand (versus the supply), there is little monetary value.
On the other hand, you and HPRed hit on another aspect of 'value'-- historic--which may not translate to monetary value. There are other aspects that effect the value of a coin. For example, a three-legged Buffalo nickel has (besides monetray value) 'conversational' value. Another example of value is in the experience of obtaining that coin--maybe from one of your parents or grandparents--and that is the 'sentimental' value; or by digging it up or finding it on the ocean floor: The value is then in the story and experience of its discovery.

You have a great coin; the value I percieve you have placed on that coin may be greater than its monetary value; so what. Enjoy the coin for the value if gives YOU.
Don...........

I have a 1663/ 16 Marvellis copper coin and I understand that is is worth about $23.00. So much for AGE.
