I'm working on thinning the herd of things I have bought in the last few months including some stinkers I paid too much for. As a result, I am really only interested in "no brainer" type purchases these days. I found only two yesterday - ironically, both at a yard sale that was not on my list of sales to visit. It was one of those, "Oh, look, there is another yard sale. Let's check it out." type things. Anyway, buy #1 was this:

This is a 4-ton manual winch commonly known in these parts as a come-along. It is in nearly new condition. These retail for about $40. I paid $5. Should be a quick Craigslist flip for $20 - $30.

The really good score (buy #2) was a Kitchen Aid mixer. I paid $25 for it. It has a little wear on it but is still in very good condition and works perfectly. I have seen used ones of this model sell on ebay for anywhere from $50 - $200, as usual condition being the major factor in the price variation. There are only 3 currently offered - all in the $150 dollar range. I will probably put it out there for a little less than that as a Buy It Now and try to flip it quickly.

Nice finds.

Remember when come-a-longs were valuable? Back in the day, come-a-longs were expensive new, or they were when I was shopping for one. The Chinese imports C-A-L's killed that market, and for a while, you could buy one for 9.99 at some of the tool shops.

I got $15 for the last used one I had.

Oh, and why is it that anytime I ever find a Kitchen-Aid mixer, they always want $150 for it?

Those kitchenaid mixers last forever. My mom had one for 25 years and used it heavily before it finally wore out and she got a new one.

There are different sizes of come-alongs, the strength rating of the cable being the determining factor in price. I looked these up on the Home Depot web site. The 1-ton variety sells for about $10. The 4-ton variety (such as this one) sells for about $40.

I got a little lucky with the mixer. They only had the whisk attachment when I was checking it out. I asked if they had any other attachments and they said no. As I was about to drive away, the lady's son come running up to my car with the hook and paddle attachments which the lady just spotted in another box she was unloading. Those attachments cost about $20 bucks each.
