Had a session yesterday, on what used to be a late Saxon market site. The site over the years as produced some fantastic late Saxon and Norman coinage, to say it's now very slow would be an under statement. The old site still gives up something though. The coins are top left William II , 1087- 1100, S1262 ( I think), Top right Cnut 1016-35, pointed helmet type 1024-30, S1158. The bottom coin is a short cross 1180- 1247. The small Medieval strap end looks very phallic in design ( they could be very rude in Medieval times:laughing7:). The site itself is rich in Medieval pottery, the piece shown looks like an handle, hope for a beer jug. Robert.

Thank's Tpmetal, just got an id through from the Fitzwilliam museum on the William coin. It is in fact William I, 1066-87. Type 5 , two stars type S1254.

Very nice hunt,,
It's incredible how you guys can identify what you have found.
Congratulations

Cheers against the wind, with small coins like these, that's where museums like the Fitzwilliam are great. They have a coin index of Saxon and Norman coins. You send them pictures of coins, they id them for you, and add them to the coin index.
