just when i thought i couldn't find a uglier coin fri finds

Back to my usual place today and managed to find a even uglier indian then the last one.Buffalo nickel is not much better. And a chillian penny.Plus clad and junk of course. You can see 3 maybe 4 feathers and a o in top corner.I'm just impressed it was that far gone and i still got it.Thought it was a stinking zincon when i dug it up.Any day you get a buffalo and a indian cent is a good day.

Wow... what are your soil conditions? Seems to be extraordinarily rough on coins. But, your finding coins!! :icon_thumleft:

Hey experts,
what causes this - acidid soils???? I found my first indian and it was totally corroded!

Not an expert, but coin condition probably caused by acidic soils, but phosphates from fertilizers can aggravate the deterioration. The IH looks like someone dumped an entire bag of fertilizer on it. The coin might also have been cut before the process began.

Acids of all kinds will affect many metals. Try it yourself. First, do this outside. Using a copper cent you don't mind losing, put it in a glass container, and add vinegar. Reaction shouldn't take too long.

Stronger acids, such as hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) and sulphuric acids will eat coins faster.
