A Wichita man has learned the homemade seat belt he puts on long before getting behind the wheel won’t get him out of a ticket for failing to buckle up.

An officer ticketed Paul Weigand during a winter traffic stop after making him get out of his car to prove the belt wasn’t connected to the vehicle. Weigand says he is terrified of becoming trapped in a burning vehicle. Plus, he says the law doesn’t specify that the seat belt has to be attached to his vehicle.

Broadcaster KWCH reported that a Wichita municipal judge agreed on that point in court Thursday. But the judge told Weigand that it’s his job to follow the intent of the law.
Weigand owes $30 for the ticket fine and $96 in court costs.

Next time out I'll bet he uses velcro to attach the belt to the seat.. That'll hold-em :tongue3:
