Anyone know if they allow MDing? What are the ins and outs?

I used to work down there and i don't believe that there are any restrictions if you're talking the public beach area of Smathers beach. As for other beaches they are private or in State or Federal Ownership (i.e., hotels, Bahia Honda and other state parks or Federal preserve areas) and there may be/probably are restrictions - check with the State DEP or the Federal Department of Interior. As for offshore MDing, there are restricted areas based on preserve boundaries and salvage leases.

I'm going there in a few days and wondering if I should bring my detector. The last time (2 years ago), the only "beach" I saw was a small strip of sand behind a private hotel with posted signs. WHERE IN KEY WEST ARE ANY BEACHES WORTH THE NAME I'm interested to know if it's worth packing it or leaving it behind....

In Key West the only "public beach" is Smathers Beach on the south side of the island. If you're driving down, as soon as you get onto the island of Key West you turn left (south) towards the airport. You'll pass the old houseboat road and the airport. You'll be driving right alongside the water but there will be a seawall. The seawall ends at Smathers Beach - you can't miss it. the other "beaches" will be private beaches at the hotels. All of the beaches are man made. Going up the chain of islands the next 'beach' will be at the Bahia Honda State Park.
