Knife handle marked sterling handle

I found this this afternoon in a plated silverware set and asked the lady how much for this broken handle? She said 50 cents. It looks older than, and doesn't feel like other sterling hollow ware I have owned. It feels more dense and weighs almost 1.5 troy ounces. Any possibility it is solid sterling and not filled with epoxy? Thanks in a dvance for any help.

No chance. There is an iron rod and cement in the handle.

I've run into some older handles that had a good bit thicker walls that had lead in the first 1.5-2" & then were hollow to the end. Generally you can see what sort of construction they have if you look in the end where the implement was.

Most likely filled with weighted material. Use your strong magnet to see if it has the iron rod inside, but a 3/16" twist drill in a good battery drill through the end collar will tell you what's inside without causing any blemishes. If' it's weighted, the drill bit's cuttings will show you what's inside. Then, you can make some decisions.

The nice handle with the solid and sturdy end collar like you found would be a great handle for a desk letter opener and might fetch you much more than scrap Sterling pricing with a little bit of time and work.
