Land-Mag let us know that a new site we discovered this year was disced down a bit. The last time we looked at the site it was a semi-ankle-breaker. With field hunting timing is everything, & the conditions were perfect. ie. pretty flat after a deep plough, but before drilling. What wasn't so nice was the boggy mud, in places it was more water than mud. So the 5 hours felt more like 8, but it was worth it. This low yield site has only produced 43 coins in all our previous outings put together but today we got 34!

34 Roman Coins
2 Broken Roman Brooches
1 Nice Roman Brooch - Type I've never seen & can't ID (anyone?), as its not in my books! The pin type suggests 1st C AD, it was once tinned & I'm thinking a Military import.
1668 Token
Tudor Knife Terminal
Circa 20BC Celtic Bronze Unit of Tasciovanus - Warrior on Horse (Rare type)

It's been a long time since i had a 30 coin day... :notworthy:
The fibula looks like a variant of a roman military crossbow brooch. Could be either an early one with germanic influence, or late when the arm flattend out like the early medieval types. Never seen one like this before.

Do you think Camuludunum Typ 13 is the right direction?

Crusader,

Another great hunt, thanks for bringing us along. Going to have to ask, who is Land-Mag, I see you reference him/her numerous times yet I don’t think I have seen them post. Also, if you get the chance, can you tell the board some of the ways you research where to seek your permissions - how you go about finding the places you think will be productive. I am also curious about how you set up how you will detect a field i.e. do you grid detect, wander until you hit a hot spot, or some other technique. As you are definitely one of the top producers on this board, many of us would be appreciative of any thoughts on detecting you can impart. I am looking forward to seeing your next adventure. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

It was one of my first comments to Cru'dad.

The pin type is definitely 1st C AD. Its an odd one for sure.

Land-Mag is the 3rd member of the Cru'Team.
We all bring something different to the party. He is mainly our researcher for new land & the permission guy. He also networks with the Arkies.
He doesn't detect much, hence the lack of posts. Although I'm sure he would if his job allowed.
Most of our places are found via Google Earth. Although we have other Arkie resources that I'm not going to share. (Although these are UK, & wouldn't help you guys)
When we target a new Site, we are looking for;
Dark Soil
Pottery
Animal Bones & Teeth
Oyster shells
Nails
Lead
Find the above & you find the coins, then start gridding in every direction until you have mapped the scatter via GPS. The size of some scatters can be over 10 acres & you need to cover it all, year after year. We don't clear a site until about 12 years of continually covering it.
