Landfill customers find treasure among trash

LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - Some may call it trash to treasure. The law may call it a crime.

According to Lawton police, several people were at the city dump this morning when they suddenly saw money -- and lots of it -- flying around.

Apparently a bulldozer burst open a container full of cash and people scooped up the dough by the handful and took off.

No one knows how much how much money was taken, but police Captain Jackie LaRoche says he knows it's against the law for an individual to keep lost property.

LaRoche says before employees figured out what was going on, some of the customers left.

I miss when Landfill hunting was Legal here.

The Rotten eggs from the Egg Factory were grose.
I can still recall the smell as a teenager.
But it was still Fun.

It used to be almost a rule when I was a kid.
"Never return from the dump with less than you took." Those were the days.
Of course I conveniently forget about the smell and the skinned knuckles. 8)

Yes I remember more then once as a Kid
Sliceing myself in glass at the dump.
No Gloves, just keep rummaging

I suppose things like that are part of the Excuses
we can't search anymore.

That & the workers want it all

Used to root around in the local "landfill"...it is now a state of the art "sports complex".

I used to find all kinds of old medicine bottles and telegraph insulators...gave them to my Mom and she decorated the windows in the house with them.

I found lots of stuff there to spark my imagination and keep me busy as a kid.

Seems funny though...

they can charge you around $20 to dump your garbage...
they weigh your vehicle going in...they weigh it going out...
if you take more out with you than bring in, then call it square...

"no charge today Sir, thankyou for visiting our facility and please come back again soon"...

if you leave the dump with less than you brought in, then charge you "pro rata" based on your departure weight. Saves room at the dump...probably cheaper to pay you if you take the stuff, than to ship it out of the County/State...or dumping it in the Ocean.

Bureaucrats...waste of good air.

Reminds me of a Basic Training mantra at our Chow Hall..."take what you want, but eat what you take."

I recall back in the 70s or 80s an armoured car overturned on a freeway overpass. I think it was somewhere in Ohio (but I could be wrong).
Money rained down on the street below. Along with several bank bags.

Of course the usual riot ensued.

The armoured car service offered the usual reward (a percentage) for any cash that was returned. I was watching the news about it, and one man had apparently called a local TV station and, wishing to remain anonymous, said that normally he would have returned it, but there was so much in the bank bags he picked up that he was set for life, and was moving out of town.

Heck, if a bag with 2 million smackers fell out of the sky like that, and I snatched it up and got safely away with it, I would still have returned it.

I mean, hell, the usual reward for something like that could make you quite a chunk o' change!
10% would be 200,000 clams!
And you would have a clear conscience to boot!

I can understand "against the law to keep lost property" but in the case of a dump...it's discarded...not lost. I do feel some sympathy for the person who accidently discarded their cash though.
