I found a large cent with an unreadable date, But I can make out the outline of the womans head and it turns out to be of the matron variety(1816-1839) I also found two buttons. I cleaned one using electrolysis and left the other alone. Theres nothing on the front and seems to be some writing on the back that I cant make out. Does anyone have any idea how old they may be? I also found a few other pieces, but I have no idea what they may be. Any ideas?

Hi, I'm fairly sure they are purse loops and they went on the flap of a purse. When you close the flap, they went over a swivel button on the main part of the body and then you turned it sideways to lock the flap. Paul :coffee2:

Seen a lot of these dug at the turn of the century military camps figured they were for some type of pack closure

The long straight piece is a broken 18th C - 19th C Clothes hook.

That must be an old spot keep lookin much more to find Good job!

Update: I zapped the large cent some more and found it was minted in 1820. I also zapped the other button and found that it has a silver coating on the front!
