can't really break off as those letters aren't really attached, they are all the same metal piece. No idea what happened to it. Looks really weird though :)

looks like a filled die.

I've seen similar things in the past as well as changes in the word cent with the e changed to a u.

story I've been told is these alterations were done by soldiers with time on their hands.

I would agree with either grease filled die or an alteration by a soldier. I'm leaning toward the second one because of the concentrated area of the missing letter/numbers as well as the lack of weak details on the rest of the coin. Could've been scraped off. Any sign of scrapes in those areas?

Thanks for the info y'all ! Buckleboy I'll have to look at it closer but i dont think there are any scrape marks ;D

Kieser,
I agree with the filled die theory. Judging from the placement of the star below Liberty's neck and the lettering on the reverse, I believe your coin is the "petite head, small letters" variety of 1839 to 1843. Can't pin it down closer than that. As to value, who can say?

Only problem with looking for scrape marks is if they were very small then corrosion might get rid of the marks.

Hi all thanks for the replys ! I've been trying to get a better picture(first i had to find the coin as i had missplaced it doh !) I dont think it has any scrapes. Its hard to get a decent pic. with my crap camera.I'll try it in better light tomorrow but heres another for now.
