Went to a new site and found this ruff large cent. Can we narrow down the the type 1816-1857 ? I'm thinking Matron Head 1816-1835. I'm not sure any thoughts?

Nice find. Study the designs of the late 1830s. And you should see yours.
 
I agree with "testing". I'd say maybe head of 1836 or thereabouts.
The older heads are "dumpier" looking than the 1830's issues , and tended to have larger dates that didn't disappear so quickly. Some of the 1830's issues had rather small, lightly struck dates. IMHO
 
its always a good find date or not!
 
go to "coins.ha.com" the heritage auctions site. there is a price guide with pics of all us coins. last summer I dug both an 1818 and 1835 matron heads in good condition and sold them for $5 each.
