Large Ornate Brass and Iron Piece

Hello All. Dug this at a 1920's-ish home site, long gone and someone's side yard now.

It's brass, 4-IN in diameter, 2-IN tall, and was about a foot down under the shell driveway. The brass is pretty thin, at first I thought it was filled with concrete but on closer inspection...there's iron inside it!?

I like the door stop idea, it does resemble a doorknob, but none of the brass ones I've got have an iron core.
