I was able to get out for a short hunt Friday after it warned up a bit. The ground thawed and the diggin' was easy - the finds were few. But nice.
I had a feathered companion for the first 30 - 45 mins. He flitted around me staying within 10-15 feet. At one point as I held my detector horizontally to step over some brush he almost landed on my coil. I'm not sure which variety he was but he was small and mostly grey with a lighter breast and throat. I had this happen last spring and I know that bird was a kinglet.

I think they were looking for a easy meal in the holes that i was opening.
Oh yeah the finds. They were few but I'm very happy! The first was a 1849 large cent - very rare around here. I've only heard of one other - that being from Carolina Tom - in his rookie year.

On Saturday I went back with my friend Bert and within the first 10 minutes I dug a flat button.

About 10 mins later Bert found what at first we thought was another largie but it turned out to be a Mexican 20 centavos - still pretty cool.
Thanks for lookin' y'all! Keep thinkin' spring!
