Dad & I decided to try a field (near the button field) which we had only spent 45 minutes on a few weeks ago. On that short trip I had found a hammered. Spent 4 hours (8 man hours) today.

1 scrappy Roman coin
1866-70 Silver 1 Franc
Cracked Crotal Bell
2 Buttons (I need) including a 'Gas Light & Coke Company'
Neolithic Flint piece

I got a very nice little Silver terminal (maybe to a pin :icon_scratch: ), I need to research this one, as I can't decide if its Saxon, Medieval or Victorian :dontknow: What ever it turns out to be its a stunning hand crafted piece :o

Whilst cutting across another field on the way back, & only 30 metres or so from the car, Dad dug a circa 10th C Saxon Stirrup Mount :headbang: It was too dark to see, but even he felt what it was with its familar flange on the reverse. This has an interesting tale - the apex loop on the top of the piece broke & they repaired it by re-drilling a hole 1/2 way down the mount, this weaken it & it later broken in the middle & was lost, never to be repaired again :)

A good finish to the year...

Re: Last Hunt of 2010.....

That silver terminal is really something! Congrats to your dad on his "on my way back to the car" find...I love those! Several of my best finds were found on my way back to the car!

Re: Last Hunt of 2010.....

That piece looks like a Saxon silver pin , the pin set of bone ::) ..... but you are a specialist in Saxon.

If you do, it will be an amazing start to the year :notworthy:

What...be early :laughing7:

Even if a person didn't know what that was (like me) You can just get a sense of quality about it.

Very nice.

Wow! Some great finds! :icon_thumright:

Congrats!

UPDATE:

(I did think of bone)

I didn't want to call it too soon, as I've never seen a Saxon pin head in silver which wasn't made in 1 piece (ie with the pin/point). I have now checked the PAS & UKDFD & there are no examples like mine but I'm now pretty sure it is Saxon:
http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=21613&cat=all

This is a very fine example & a plain one with no decoration was valued in 2004 at £130, so this must be double that!

It will now need reporting :headbang: What an excellent finish to the year ;D

I think this will turn out to be Very Rare or better :o

I'm almost completely sure it's the top of a Saxon silver pin, the rest of the pin was and was sugeto bone through the hole has a bolt side ..... but I can be wrong because the Medieval age is not my specialty.
A great find .... congrats!

As always, great Finds!
love the Pin! heck I love em All.
Best Wishes & Happy New Year! Herbie
