Over the last few days I have dug about 6 test pits - 1 metre x 1 metre x 4ft deep. Only one of them next to my previously successful pit was any good. Shows how lucky we were!
When I started this dig I was hoping for a figural piece of Samian, I've never had any & it was on my eyes only wish list. (not on my top 5 detecting list)
Today I finally got what I wished for. I was following a burnt pit area at the base of my 4ft hole & I was scrapping & poking about with my trowel when it just flipped out of the ground in front of me. A great surprise, as I never saw it until it popped out!
I'm done in this yard for this year, but I've not put off the idea of returning again.
Plus a rare piece of Roman decorated glass.
Mission complete!
PS. I found the Roman's liked their snails, something I enjoyed in Belgium with butter & garlic.
