Laws on detecting overseas

Hi Youall< I was wondering if anyone knows about metal detecting in France. I have heard both Yes you can and no you can't. (lawfully) Thanks for any info.

I guess my big concern would be how to get your
detectors there without them being stolen....or your bags being pilfered.
Maybe you can insure your luggage?

I have made 26 trips to Europe in the last 13 years and have never had a problem
