Here is a small lead toy soldier I found in a ghost town dating back to 1880.

Best to date these on context. They have been been childrens toys from long before 1880 and well after. If you are finding 1880s material near where you found it, then it may fit that date. Many of these molds were used for many years so it is difficult to nail down a date based on the h&r alone.I am especially fond of mine because of the history of the site I dug it. After you research the property, you get to know the folks who lived there....and their younguns.that makes these little finds special to me. Young Jack Richard and his little brothers played with my H&R back between 1860 and 1880.

Great info, thank you. I was excited to find it, the site of an old schoolhouse was nearby. I also found this:

My avatar is cast iron and quite a bit bigger than your lead horse. Mine came off of a circa 1876 bell toy.
Yours is a lead toy, and "villagenut" is pretty much spot on with the date range.
I have a few of those, too, all dug from old house sites.
