Lead Pencil?

‎Found this yesterday on an older site...1700-1800 and was curious as to if it could be an actual lead pencil. Did such a thing exist? *

I have found similar pecise in CW camps and have read that soilders sometimes in a pinch would carve or sharpen lead and use it to write. That's what it looks like to me. Sharpen the end a little and write with it. Works great, I've done it with mine. Nice find.

the opposite end looks like its tapered to a chiseled flat point ?
