Let's get small - Opinions on small coils

I'm close to making a purchase of a small coil for my Etrac and considering two options.
A 6" DD EXcelerator EQ 2 Pro, or
a Sunray Stealth X5

I'd love to hear what owners of these coils and Etracs think about them.
What's the good?
What's the bad (if any) ?
How does the depth compare to your standard Etrac coil?
When would you NOT want to use one?
Did you also buy an additional lower shaft?

Any info would be appreciated!

haven't tried one yet but one of my friends has both and always talks about the sunray. Found lots of clad in his yard with it after he thought it was hunted out with his stock coil. He has an extra shaft just to make changing back and forth easier.

I have a 6x8 SEF for my E-trac, and it is my favorite coil now. It is great in trash; I've pulled several overlooked silvers with it from trashy areas. 1 dime came in a 2 inch diameter hole with a rusty nail, a piece of foil, and a Bottle cap. I also get alright depth with it. I managed a dime at an honest 7.5 inches with it. I can't speak to the coils you mentioned, but the SEF, in auto sens +3 runs at 27+ a lot of the time -- really stable.

Re: Let's get small - Opinions on small coils

When I was researching which small coil to get, I concluded that the 6" Excellerator was awesome on depth and good on separation. The X5 is awesome on separation and good on depth.

I went with the 6" coil and it does a great job on separation and does a good job of retaining depth. Figure 7-8" on dimes.

What it really comes down too what you want out of the small coil. If you want to retain depth with better separation than the stock coil go with the 6". If you want maximum separation and don't care about loosing an inch or two on depth over the 6" go with the X5.

Re: Let's get small - Opinions on small coils

Soon after buying my E-Trac last year I become convinced I needed a smaller coil to hunt trashy areas I knew wasn't hunted out in a locale park.

My son owns a Fisher CZ6 and he was telling me about a area of this park that he found 6 silvers in one afternoon but the trash was wall to wall. I tried hunting that area with my stock 11" coil and did manage to eek out one silver but the trash was driving me crazy. I bought the Sunray X5 and found it to be a super coil for trash. I have found it's ability for target separation to be phenomenal. I have as yet to go into this area and not come away with silver, some dating to the late 1800's. One thing I have found about this coil is the the high pitched warble you get on silver, there just is no mistaking it no matter what the target ID is that sound gives it away.

Another use I have found for this loop is in high iron areas, running in TTF. By working slow and listening for that high pitch on non ferrous targets you can really pick out the good signals. Depth wise 7 to 8". Only complaint is the depth readings are not very accurate. Have found the targets to be deeper then what it reads. Otherwise a super coil. Rick :coffee2:

Which coil did you decide on?

Re: Let's get small - Opinions on small coils

Mayo,
Re-looking at your question, I'll add I did not buy a lower shaft. When I am detecting, the 6x8 fits easily in my pouch. When I need to switch from big coil to small coil, I just rope my pouch belt through the larger coil and it stays around my waist. I could not easily take 2 coils with me, say deep into the woods, if I had to worry about an extra shaft. Switching coils does not take much time and so ease of carry and saving money, to me trumps the 20 seconds saved from having an extra shaft. Of course, I have a broken Sunray probe on my detector, and the only thing it does is provides the external switch box, which makes me not have to thread the cable through the lower shaft every time I switch...
