An old trick used by many ammunition collectors. Get a quart jar of really light penetrating oil and drop the round in. Leave them there for a week or two. Dip them out, dry them off, shine 'em up, and put tehm on display. They will be harmless. The oil will penetrate the case and "kill" the priming compound and the powder charge. No bang, no boom, no "holes in the head".

I too have tossed bullets into the fire.
The brass burst and that's about it.
Not recommended for "Proper Disposal".
Give them to a LEO. ( Law Enforcement Officer ).
There is the PC version.
