Let's see some local history......

I love to find anything that I can tie to local history. Here are a couple of my favorite "local" finds:

The first is a cigar/drink token from the Polk-Gray Drug Store on the "Square" in Statesville. The building still stands today and it is now a sporting goods store.

The next piece was found about a month ago. I believe this piece was given to a veteran returning home from WWI. It reads "Welcome Home Soldiers, Sailors & Marines - Newton, NC" Every year there is a festival called the Old Soldiers Reunion on the square in downtown Newton, NC. I suspect that is where the piece came from, but I am still trying to confirm that.

Great idea for a thread Tony! Nice pieces of local history you have there as well. Can't say my contribution is as old as yours but it's from NC none-the-less. Fiftieth anniversary token from Perpetual Savings and Loan Association in High Point (1901-1951). Apparently, they went under in 1998...

The copper token is from a grocery store north of Charlotte early 1900's, the badge I'm not sure of, but was found at the old fairgrounds in Concord, and finally some Charlotte City and Mecklenburg County tokens.

Here's a Raleigh bank token I dug at a plantation house a few months back. It dates anywhere from 1912 when the bank was built to 1957 when the bank changed names

One of our club member found a very similar token for a bank here in Charlotte but it was good for 25 cents towards one year safety deposit box rental. Pretty cool!

The first item is some type of tag that I found a few years ago. It reads "Manufactured for R.R. Boggs Catawba, NC". Well, my curiosity got the best of me, so I went to work trying to find out who R.R. Boggs was. The research finally paid off. I found this photo of Mr. R.R. Boggs himself. I found a picture of Mr. Boggs inside his paint and hardware store in Catawba, NC. He is the one with the way cool hat and glasses and holding a "Lucky". Look closely up over his shoulder and tell me if that ain't Gomer Pyle!

The second photo is a ring I found a few years ago. It is a State Championship (Volleyball) ring from Fred T. Foard High School. It belonged to a young lady named Mai Lo. I called the school for information and the lady in the office was so excited, she went and got her out of class and put her on the phone. She told me her sister had "borrowed" the ring without her knowledge and then lost it. I got to return the ring, collect a reward (1 hug) and now she is speaking to her sister again!
