I know the most immediate response to this question would be "don't dare" but here's the thing: some of my favorite old coppers are super dark and in my coin album very hard to see what they actually are. Most of them are not worth much, dollar-wise, but invaluable to me especially when showing others. I actually don't care that much about their value, so re-coloring or re-toning is not an issue. For me this hobby is not so much about making money. I think my grandkids or great-grand kids looking through my book of finds is way cooler than the few bucks a corroded copper coin will fetch.
Someone once told me about a solution that you used to be able to buy at coin shops that took the dark brown off. Anyone remember what that was, or if you can still purchase?
Thanks, Steve
