I dug this chain recently on an old (1850's) homestead site. When I pulled it up I thought - trace chain - but I have never seen a rectangular attachment like that - looks like it may have been made to swivel - the chain looks hand hammered. I am wondering if anyone has seen a similar design and what it was used for. The piece on the end is 4" long - you can comfortable put your hand into it like a handle.

The flattened loop on the end is to match a leather part of a harness.
