i droped off about $30 in halves marked "whitesid" on them. i put them in the coin mechine along with other non-marked halves and it filled the bag. i know they ship the bags out to be rolled for some boxes, so let me know if you find any. and from now on i will be marking more halves so keep an eye out.
another question....how do you mark your halves? been finding many marked haves latley.

I'll be on the look out White. It would be neat to come across one. Personally, I don't mark the coins I check. I just put a splash of my perfume on them...lol.....that way all I have to do is just smell the roll to see if I have already checked them....just kidding.

lol ill make sure to smell my halves

Can we redeem your Whitesides for valuable prizes?
I think we should get a pool going here to see who can find one of those first.
Entry fee = 1 - 90% Kennedy.
What do you think?

I'm in!

My wife caught me sniffing my halves just the other day and let me have it with her rolling pin! ;D I mark my return roll wrappers with MSH my initials....

I sometimes put a large V across the face, all go into a coin counter then "who knows". None have come home yet :) Portland OR
I find a lot of these, 5-10 a box---------

I have marked halves with a common box cutter by etching a roman numeral to the direct right of Kennedy. I did it originally to see if I was getting the same coins back that I put into the coin counter. (roman numeral is of the year I mark it, so III was 2003, IV was 2004, this year is VII). So far, have not gotten a single one back out of the boxes I get. That's a good sign!

On the subject, what percentage of coins searched does everyone mark?Mine is MM on the obverse in black marker.

Zero.
Marked coins become less collectible and more likely to remain in circulation when spent. I would rather others keep the halves I spend in their own piggy banks rather than let them go back to the bank only to be seen again and again and again. In my searches, I have come across a few coins that I would have kept had they not been marked. Still dreading the day I come across a "rare" error coin only to find a big mark on it...

Also, its a real downer to search a sealed box in which 80% or more of the coins are marked even if the keeper total is the same as in an unmarked box. This I can say from experience, just not the same rush when almost every coin is marked.

Also, just curious. Besides knowing if you got any of your coins back, what advantage is there to marking the coins? In a sealed box are you not still going to look at every edge since there will be other coins mixed in? Now I can understand a little more when a variety hunter marks coins of a specific date that don't have errors as error detection is more time consuming.

Sorry to sound preachy, just a personal observation/opinion.
Good luck on your searches.

The marked percentage is incredibly low. Once I found out that my bank gets their halves from a different source than they sell them, I had no real reason (other than curiosity) to mark them. And the ones I marked were usually common bicentennials.

I think my issue stems from the fact that someone in the Twin Cities area has edge marked so many halves that every box from one source seems to be 80%+ edge marked. Additionally, many of the boxes I get from any other source also have a few coins with the same markings. I have found 2002+ with markings on them that I would have saved had they not been all marked up. I also heard comments from a fellow CRHer I ran into a coin show a while back who has had similar experiences. Although some of the edge marked boxes have been skunks, I have found a few keepers mixed in occasionally as well so can't just use the markings to determine its not worth searching, I just don't see the benefit of marking that many.

I can't control what people do (nor do I intend to). I just wanted to add something to think about for those who do like to mark their coins.

I mark the edge of all my halves with a blue perm marker. If I start getting a large percentage back that is when I start buying my boxes from a different source. So far after about $17000 no returns.
