Found this beauty on the shore of a lake I was detecting near. I was doing a pass toward the water and for some reason looked up and VIOLA there it was in all it's glory!:tongue3: It took off in the water soon after I took this pic... didn't find much else but newer pennies so at least the day was somewhat interesting.

Don't believe you have cotton mouths that far north but eyes look elliptical which normally means pit viper. I would guess water snake but I don't know snakes very well. It looks pretty big though.

That sure does appear to be a cottonmouth to me!
Triangular shaped head.
Line running from it's eye.
Thick body.
And the color is right.

By the size and color, looks like a female cottonmouth.

I thought head looked triangular too. I sure wouldn't bet my monthly pension on it not being a cotton mouth.

Strange indeed since WI doesn't have many snakes at all unless you go more west toward the Mississippi River. But I agree with the consensus that it is a cottonmouth or water moccasin.

Where is this at? In WI?!

Ugh..I hate snakes..they give me the willies!

Yes it is in Wisconsin. Sparta to be more exact which is about twenty miles from the Mississippi. I know next to nothing about snakes but it swam out about two feet and eyed me up for awhile. I would estimate it was approx five feet in length all the same color. I have another pic from a different viewpoint I'll try tomorrow

Looks like a Northern Water Snake.

Ding Ding Ding! I think that is it. I googled it and it acted and looked like one.

A daughter of a friend of mine was disappointing I didn't capture it so she could have it as a pet. Yeah, no thanks, live and let live as far as I'm concerned.

They can be pretty aggressive!

Yeah, capture it with a shotgun!

That second pic sure does not look like the snake in pic #1.
The 2nd pic is, for sure, a water snake.
But pic #1 sure looks like a cottonmouth!

NO cottonmouths north of the Mason-Dixon line. It is a harmless water snake, no venom. Like most of the northern water snakes they are a little aggressive and don't make good pets. Better to leave wild snakes in their natural habitat anyways.

I enlarged the pic and his head isn't as triangular as it looks...I thought it looked like a cottonmouth at first.

I talked to a local snake enthusiast and he said it was a Prairie Bull snake. He's actually seen this particular snake a few times as he mows the lawn where I saw it. Whatever... it was cool nonetheless.

I would argue that. Maybe not far past the Mason-Dixon Line, but we have them here, 20 miles north of it.
