Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum, but not to MD'ing. I began about 15 years ago when I was in college. Turns out, Charles Garrett and I share the same alma mater, Lamar University. He stopped by during my junior year to speak to us budding engineers and pass on some wisdom about starting your own company, running a successful business, etc. He also just HAPPENNED to give a big presentation on all of his treasure hunting exploits and leave behind an exhibit of many of his extraordinary finds at the campus library. Staring at gold doubloons, bars of Spanish silver, piles of rings and necklaces, statues, relics, and every other item imagineable that you could find with a MD can sure plant the treasure bug deep. I bought my first MD, a Garrett Master Hunter 5 w/ ADS within the month. Mr. Garrett is a great engineer, and an even better salesman!

Well, on to my question(s). I am in the market for a modern MD for my son and I to use. I have my eye on the Garrett GTI 2500, but I am going to hold off on that purchase for a while. For the interim I am thinking about the ACE 250. It should serve as a descent entry level detector for my son, and a good backup for me after I purchase the 2500. My question is this: is the 250 good for anything beyond coin shooting? How does it rate for jewelry and relic hunting?

Also, I have not seen much posted about Garrett's mid line detectors, the GTP 1350 and GTA 550/400 series. I have seen like models on Ebay going for around $250 to $300 dollars. This isn't much more than a new ACE 250 from KellyCo. Are there any opinions on these detector's abilities vs. the cost difference?

Hi, and welcome to the forum and welcome back to the hobby! I can't speak to the Garrett mid-level detectors, but I can tell you about my ACE250. I purchased it in March as an upgrade from a Bounty Hunter, and the differance is like night and day. My coin finds have more than tripled with the ACE250. It's a great machine for the money, and you'll like it, and when you upgrade, it will be perfect for your son. It's very sensitive, lightweight and east to swing for hours without tiring. I find that the target ID and depth indicator are VERY accurate. The pinpoint feature was a little tricky at first, but once you figure out where the hotspot on your coil is, it's dead-on! You'll enjoy the ACE250, and your son will give you a run for your money with it once he learns it to. Good luck with whichever you choose, and I hope to be seeing you post some cool finds from you and your son! HH!

I have yet to find any gold with my ace 250 but I am also new to the hobby. It is a great coin shooter I'll say that, and as far as relics go if its copper, iron, or brass at a depth of 8 inches it will find it. I havent found or should I say dug anything yet deeper than that. It found 1/2 of a bobby pin at about 5 inches if that helps. Deepest coin I've found was a penny at about 6-8 inches.

I have no complaints about my ace accept that the coil wouldnt stay locked at particular angle to the shaft, fixed that with a dab of silicone and now its perfect for me.

I have a gtax 750.........have found items so small you could barely see them.. how about half a fish hook at 6 in , about 1/4 in long ? type of metal seems to make no difference...just reads different on scale . On coins it is most accurate, if it says nickle or quarter...thats what is is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will buy another !! Next one will be gti 2500 . Will detect for food......hungry...please call..br...549

Hi, Myself and treasurekidd did the same thing. I upgraded to the ACE250 and have been smiling since. You will absolutely be amazed at the tiny things it will detect. I agree that it is the best entry level machine that acts much more expensive!!! Garrett sure hit the mark with this unit ;D

You can't go wrong with the 250 as a 1st machine, a kids/woman's machine, a back up machine, or a handy easy to use, carry with you everywhere machine as a general purpose detector, when not using a high end machine.

You'll find tons of stuff with almost effortless hrs of hunting due to the fact it's so light, very sensitive, and easy to use.

If you want the "Cadillac version" - step up to the 2500

I have the 2500 and my significant other has the 250

I've written respective results on the ease of operation, finds, sensitivity, uses, etc. etc. here on the forum that you can find if you search in "Metal Detecting" for 250 reviews/results, and so have others.

Good luck, HH

Nothing wrong with the mid line detectors, just depends on how much you want to spend and if you want new or used. I have seen Used GTI 2500's sell for 450.00 to 500.00 on the forum.

Thanks, Everyone, for your responses and opinions. It is hard to find anyone downplaying the ACE 250. It appears to have cornered the market as far as price vs. features and performance is concerned.

I am new to the hobby and purchased the 250 to get started and I have dug about everything BUT coins... tho that is due to location... lots of misc stuff... I have found all types of metals so far except gold... it sees my plat wedding band often, heh. I am still getting used to the pinpointing bit, but I am getting better and better! At this time, unless I were to go looking for super deep caches or serious prospecting, I cant see a reason to need something more expensive.

I have been at this hobby for about 7 months and have both the ACE 250 and the GTI 2500. I have been keeping a monologue going under this forum as I am learning my 2500. I have made some interesting observations that I think you would benifit from . I am just now getting into more serious attempts at "treasure " hunting with the 2500 and will continue to report my progress as I go. Up until 2 months ago I had found no rings at all. In the last 2 months I have found 4 with the 2500 and found a half of a ring just yesterday. I use the ACE 250 mostly for coin shooting and I don't think it can be beat for that purpose. Every newbie should start out coin shooting because of the instant success, especially a child...just my opinion. JIM
