I would agree that it is definitely death-related. If it's quite small, it might be a mourning jewelry pin.

:-* That is a really interesting relic. A head with wings usally is a funerary symbol, and I have seen that somewhere before. I'll try to track it down.
 

I've seen that symbol on old gravestones . It represents " The soul in flight "
My gravestone rubbing kit has it on the label . Interesting find !
