Civil war lead & post war gag loop

I found some civil war lead & a gsg loop today. The gag loop is post war from what I've been told. It makes me wonder how it worked.

Well as a former CW Reenactor, l did have the honor to experience a few mega events (Antietam & Gettysburg) where there were 5,000 - 10,000 reenactors. It's was an amazing experience.

Cool thanks. I believe it was used to keep the horse from lowering it's head. A overcheck does that now.
