At first I thought this was just a penny, but I don't think that's the case. It's slightly concave (or convex, depending on how you look at it). It's slightly smaller than a penny. There are wavy lines on one side, and I can't make out anything on the reverse side. Any recommendations on cleaning it are appreciated, does anyone know what it is?
 

looks like a flat button with the shank broken off to me

Yup! Late 1700's early 1800's flat button! Any writing on the back?
