Hi Everone, just been down to a battle site that was fought in 1863. Found this item but not to sure of age or use. Had a crimson filling that I have taken out, Does cordite turn crimson with age?? Dimensions are 40mm long and 12mm Diameter. End of cartridge reads MED RED. Any Ideas?? Hope the pictures help, best I could do. You comments will be appreciated. Cheers

Thanks montana Jim, Think you got it in one. Never thought of that, Amazing it was found around a trench.

Not sure - hard to tell from one picture, but your carefull inspection of the piece compared to antique lipsticks... :)

Seems to be an artillery primer, inserted into the breech to initiate the firing of artillery rounds.
My guess, found some items like that one here in Germany.
