Looks like an ammo round??

Hi Everone, just been down to a battle site that was fought in 1863. Found this item but not to sure of age or use. Had a crimson filling that I have taken out, Does cordite turn crimson with age?? Dimensions are 40mm long and 12mm Diameter. End of cartridge reads MED RED. Any Ideas?? Hope the pictures help, best I could do. You comments will be appreciated. Cheers

Not sure - hard to tell from one picture, but your carefull inspection of the piece compared to antique lipsticks...

Seems to be an artillery primer, inserted into the breech to initiate the firing of artillery rounds.
My guess, found some items like that one here in Germany.
