I have been unable to get my weekly box of halves from my bank for the past two weeks and I have confirmed (with my 'inside man' at the bank) that Loomis has decreed that member banks may not order half dollars (or dollar coins) from them -- claiming there is a 'coin shortage'.

Funny how coins that DO NOT CIRCULATE (and haven't for decades) are now in (allegedly) short supply.

Apparently, the embargo does not apply to lower denomination coins.

I'm not buying this malarkey.

I guess I'll need to find a bank that doesn't use Loomis.

a coin shortage?

that sounds far fetched.

during the height of the covid pandemic I could see this possibility, but not today.

Loomis may have decided locally to not deliver halves and dollars, both of which have near zero circulation compared to any other coin.

The reason is likely invented by your bank branch. I would surmise that the real reason may be increased fees imposed by Loomis.

This opinion is based on conversation with a local Credit Union branch. Both the Branch Manager and Vault Teller tell me that they can order a few boxes of any denomination at no cost to me except halves and dollars, which they would have to pass along all fees, as the increased cost has been imposed on them by their cash management company, in this case, Brinks.

Time for more coffee.

My bank is delighted to order me six boxes a week.......from Loomis!

I switched suppliers this year and I believe they use Loomis... was worried about this week's pickup after I saw this thread but no issues so far here. It sounds like your bank is pulling your leg, like my old pickup bank was.

Excuses, excuses... except for the real one - They don't want to have to cover the cost for the special orders. They could at least be real and not blame something else.
